Nu Adventures – Paradise

In Which We Wake Up In Paradise

At the end of Day 2 of our Nu Adventures we camped for the night at Paradise Flats, a beautiful spot inland from Haast. We drove up the Haast River Valley until we found this gorgeous little spot. The campsite itself wasn’t much, but the view if you walked a little was fabulous and we had it to ourselves. For a while. Another couple of vans turned up after dark, but they parked well away from us. We built a campfire, poured the wine and made a pretty average chilli-chicken noodle dish which I would have been extremely disappointed with turning out in our kitchen at home, but because we were in the great outdoors, cooking on our tiny camper cooker and eating beside a campfire, it was…  Paradise!

The next morning was just as stunning as the one before…

… but our little campsite was shady and frosty, so we decided to hit the road in search of sonewhere sunny for breakfast. We stopped at Cameron Flats, cranked out the espresso, bacon and eggs once more. Yeah, roughing it!

Eventually the sandflies got the better of us and we set off in search of adventure again, this time determined to be a bit more touristy and STOP occasionally. 5 minutes up the road we stopped. There was a walk to the Blue Pools, so we booted up and started hiking. Well, I say hiking, but it’s a pretty soft 20 minute walk through some nice bush, cross a swing bridge and you’re there.

In Which We Reach Lake Wanaka

We dawdled along the Makarora River Valley towards Lake Wanaka, stopped for cake & hot chocolate at a cute wee cafe in the middle of nowhere and carried on til we got to Lake Wanaka. We were pretty determined that we’d camp at either Boundary Creek or Kidds Bush, whichever looked better. We stopped at Boundary Creek first and were hooked. It was only lunch time, but it was a gorgeous place to stop for the night and there was a longer walk nearby that we could do so we found a spot in a deserted area of the campsite and went to enjoy the lake.

This was the view out of the door of our campervan – perfect right?

Dinner was a rather posh vege pasta bake. The wee grill drawer was coming in very handy, although as you can see was a bit localised in terms of it’s heat output. It tasted great and the view was top notch.

Nu Adventures is the story of our 3 month adventure around the South Island of New Zealand in over Autum/Winter of 2011. The rest of the adventure will be published soon, follow my blog for updates.

    1. Thank you, that’s very kind 🙂 It was definitely one of the more idyllic days we had on that trip and I love that the photos illustrate how perfect that day was – it’s not just rose-tinted memories, it really happened!
