Tranquil Pigeon Bay in monochrome
Laura & Morgan’s day was a little rainy to start off with, but their positivity, love and energy shone through. With their friends, family, and baby daughter they celebrated their wedding at the beautiful Mt Vernon Lodge.
The rain eased off later in the afternoon just in time for photographs down by the lighthouse, harbour and jetty. Laura’s mum had hired an awesome vintage car for the photoshoot, so we stopped off at the boat ramp for some shots with the harbour and super dramatic clouds as a backdrop. The very last stop was at the beach, where Morgan’s sister drew a hear with the couple’s initials in the sand – so sweet!
A rainy day turned out to be a bit of a photographer’s blessing – dramatic after-rain cloudy skies, soft light, and a tourist-free beach!

Here’s my highlights from Laura & Morgan’s day…
Towards the end of our evening out to see if we could catch an Aurora I decided that the milky way was so spectacular that I wanted to take a photograph of it arcing down over Banks Peninsula. The silhouette of the flax on the left with the haze of Christchurch behind it was too good to leave out too.
Just as we were about to pack up and go Greg picked up the torch and went to make a romantic gesture under the stars…. unfortunately we only got the one go at doing some painting with light as the torch decided it’d had enough and went for early retirement. Luckily the moon was so bright that it lit our way back down the frosty trail to the car!

Alicia & Keegan had their ceremony & reception at beautiful Mt Vernon, overlooking Akaroa Harbour on Banks Peninsula. The views are spectacular, and we were very lucky to have blue skies to compliment the aqua sea & ochre hills. The unity candle ceremony was almost hampered by gusty winds, but by working together as a team Alicia & Keegan got the candle lit in the end.
After the ceremony the bridal party and I went for a tiki tour around Akaroa. The first stop was at the iconic jetty where I got some beautiful shots as the wind caught Alicia’s veil. Next we went for a bit of a drive to find the lighthouse – got a wee bit lost trying to find it, but find it we did – and on the way stopped off the playground in Tane’s Garden for some more casual shots on the playground equipment. By the time we got to the lighthouse the evening light was golden and romantic, making it absolutely perfect for wedding photography. We had a few quick shots with the bridal car (Alicia tells me that it’s Keegan’s pride & joy), and after some candid shots walking over the bridge into Akaroa we went back up the hill to Mt Vernon Estate for the reception.

The yachts looked like toys arranged amidst a model landscape, the harbour an eye-catching shade of teal and the sky softened by fluffy candy-floss clouds… I couldn’t resist!

On a leisurely Sunday drive around a couple of the Bays on the Peninsula I was captivated by the mirror-smooth water at high tide in Charteris Bay.

The winter sun sparkling off the ocean, the slight fog on the ocean making the silhouette of the jetty that much more solid… all in all a particularly magical day.

I was really drawn to the symmetry of these sheds on the jetty at Port Levy, on Banks Peninsula. The lighting on this stunning winter day was just perfect too and the slight fog on the water just added to the magical atmosphere of the day.
